A multifaceted musician, Brisbane-based electric and upright bassist Kate Gillespie has been making her mark on the Queensland music scene having performed with the likes of Broadway Star of Miss Saigon and singing voice Lea Salonga (Disney's Aladin and Mulan) under the direction of Larry Yurman (MD Les Miserables Broadway 1987 - 2003).
Alongside working as a freelance artist, Kate also toured regional Queensland with Australia country music star Troy Cassar-Daley and James Morrison with Queensland Youth Orchestra Big Band as part of the Queensland Music Festival (2013). Kate has performed at a wide variety of venues around Brisbane including Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), Concert Hall (Queensland Youth Orchestras and Fanfare Grand Final), Brisbane Powerhouse (Queensland Conservatorium) and the Brisbane Jazz Club (Mark Paradella Quintet).
Kate has extensive experience on both upright and electric bass, performing in a variety musical productions. Her musical pit work recently included two Queensland premieres; Next to Normal at the Cremorne Theatre QPAC (Oscar Theatre Company) and Kiddnapping for Jesus (Underground Productions). Other productions of note include; Hair (Queensland Conservatorium), Legally Blonde (Prima) and Grease (Redcliffe Musical Theatre).
Kate has obtained her Bachelor of Music degree at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (majoring in jazz bass) under the direction of Dr Steve Newcomb who has recorded and arranged for; Katie Noonan, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Jose McLaughlin (Gerry and the Pacemakers / composer for 2000 Sydney Olympics opening ceremony) and M.M. Peter Walters (Johnny Griffin, James Morrison, and Australian touring support act for Diana Krall).
Kate recently returned from studying Popular Music at Falmouth University in the United Kingdom as part of the Griffith University International Mobility Program, where she further developed her skills in composition and vocal training.
